As one of the largest chemical companies in Latin America, Brazil’s Unigel Petrochemical Company said in a statement on Monday (July 25) that it plans to build a green hydrogen plant in Bahía, northeastern Brazil, with an initial investment of US$120 million , aiming to make it one of the largest green hydrogen plants in the world.
The green hydrogen plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2023, and its electrolytic hydrogen production process will use equipment technology provided by Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Nucera, the company said. The first phase of the project is expected to produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen and 60,000 tons of green ammonia annually; the second phase of the Camacari project, which will be implemented in 2025, is expected to quadruple the output of green hydrogen and ammonia.

It has attracted the attention of several Brazilian companies due to its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation and steel industries. The green hydrogen and ammonia produced in the industrial city of Kamassari will be supplied to businesses seeking to decarbonize their operations. Fortescue Future Industries signed a pre-contract this year to build a plant in Pecem; Shell also announced a project in Rio de Janeiro’s port of Acu.
